Given that I've owned a PC since the DOS days, I've installed a number of operating systems in my life. I usually dread the process, making sure I set aside multiple hours of "just in case" time that always ends up being "Yup I needed it" time. Well, last night that all changed!
I received my Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OEM disc along with 4GB of additional RAM yesterday and was excited to get the installation underway because I'd already made my full data and driver backup the night before.
It seems the backup was unnecessary because upon installing Windows 7, it simply created a Windows.old folder that carried over to my new OS with pretty much everything you could dream of inside. How strangely convenient of you, Microsoft!
The install took about 1 hour, which I spent eating dinner and catching up on an episode of Dexter season 3 with the wife. I went downstairs after dishes we done to check up on all the incompatibility and driver issues that were bound to pop up but they weren't there! How strangely uncharacteristic of you, Microsoft!
I updated my video card, sound card, motherboard, mouse, and keyboard drivers to the latest Win7 releases and it all went as smooth as silk. Only one reboot was necessary! WTF, Microsoft??? That's not like you at all!
I opened the case, gave it a quick dusting, and installed my new RAM. It was recognized immediately and apparently compatible with my old stuff. Yay for doing your research and having it pan out.
So, everything went surprisingly well. That was pleasant for a change! Now I need to spend the next few days downloading and installing all my software. I think Steam is probably going to take the longest given that I have a number of games purchased from their store. I think I'll start that up just before bed tonight.
