If there's one thing I can't stand in League of Legends it's when your match is going honky dory for 10-25 minutes and all of a sudden someone leaves or disconnects due to Internet issues.
I understand there are legitimate reasons for leaving a game--life happens--but the vast manjority of leaves are a result of players ragequitting. Even if you have a valid reason for leaving, you're still screwing the rest of us over by doing so. Why should you be allowed to do that without repercussion?
As for laggers, why are you even playing a competitive PvP game if you can't physically compete? You're not only dragging yourself down, but you're wasting your entire team's time because it's so much harder to compete without you (unless you totally suck and keep feeding).
So anyway, here are a few ideas to help cut down on the leaving (legit or otherwise) and disconnecting:
- Establish leave to total game ratio. Riot already keeps track of leaves in our stats, so why not actually make it mean something? If you're leaving 2-5% or more of your games, you are having a negative impact on other players and should be punished for it.
- Once you hit a certain ratio, you're only allowed to queue up for games with OTHER leavers. How do you like them apples, jerkface? The kicker: To get yourself out of the leaver queue you must complete 5 consecutive games without leaving!
- Leavers with a bad enough ratio should suffer a negative IP bonus. Until your leaver ratio hits the green, you earn 10-20% less IP per game. Alternatively or in conjunction with, the normal consecutive game IP bonus should be boosted to reward non-leavers. What is it at now? Like +23 IP maxed out? That's lame.
- If you leave a game, not only can you not play until your current game is over, you should suffer an additional 10-minute timeout. Sit in the corner and sulk, crybaby. This won't punish too many legit leavers because if you have to bail on a game chances are you won't be back within 20-30 minutes.
- The team with a leaver should gain some kind of outnumbered buff like 15% more hit points, mana, attack damage, ability points, armor, and magic resistance. This buff should last until the game is over or the leaver returns. It's not fair that 4 others should suffer because 1 guy had a bad temper or had to change his kid's diaper.
- Give players the option in solo queue to join a game someone just left. They join the game by taking over the leaver's character exactly as it was left in order to help finish the match. Players who volunteer for this spot and complete the game should receive an additional XP/IP bonus. If a player accidentally disconnected and wants to come back he has the option to take over his character again or start a new game.
The forums are full of angry threads every single day trying to come up with solutions for the leaver issue. In my last 10 games I have gone 2-10. At least 5 of those losses are due to someone with a horrible connection (who spent 1/2 the game not contributing) or a straight up leaver who couldn't take the heat. Personally, I'm starting to get sick of it myself, so I thought I'd come up with some viable solutions.
